India Upgrades Kabul Mission to Embassy Status: Jaishankar’s Remarks

India has officially upgraded its technical mission in Kabul to a full-fledged embassy, a decisive move to enhance diplomatic engagement with Afghanistan. This significant announcement occurred during External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar’s meeting with Afghan Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi in New Delhi on Friday.

Since the Taliban’s takeover in August 2021, India withdrew its officials from the Kabul embassy. In June 2022, India redeployed a technical team to resume limited operations, setting the stage for today’s upgrade. Through this enhanced diplomatic presence, India aims to bolster its engagement with Afghanistan, emphasizing humanitarian aid, infrastructure development, and regional security cooperation.

“Your visit is crucial for advancing our ties and demonstrates our enduring friendship with Afghanistan,” Jaishankar stated during his welcome remarks. “As a neighbor and well-wisher of the Afghan people, India is deeply invested in your development and prosperity.”

Jaishankar highlighted the renewed partnership, which includes various major projects that India has executed in Afghanistan over the years. He commended the Taliban administration for displaying “sensitivity towards India’s security concerns” particularly following the recent Pahalgam terror attack.

“India and Afghanistan share a mutual commitment to growth, stability, and prosperity. Both nations face the collective challenge of cross-border terrorism,” emphasized Jaishankar. He called for coordinated efforts to tackle terrorism in all forms, underlining that cooperation is essential for achieving their shared goals.

In his responses, Afghan Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi recognized India as a significant regional player that has steadfastly supported the Afghan populace. He expressed gratitude for India’s humanitarian assistance and reiterated Kabul’s eagerness to expand cooperation in key areas such as trade, infrastructure, and education.

The upgrade of India’s diplomatic mission in Kabul serves as a clear indicator of New Delhi’s cautious yet strategic re-engagement with the Taliban-led government. The decision reflects India’s concern for security, regional stability, and its longstanding ties with the Afghan population.
