Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday commemorated the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) during its centenary celebrations in Nagpur. The Prime Minister highlighted the organization’s long-standing commitment to the nation amid diverse challenges and praised its significant contributions towards unity and harmony.
Modi, addressing the RSS members, emphasized the principle of “nation first” that the organization holds dear. He remarked, “The Sangh has always prioritized country over self, exhibiting resilience despite facing numerous attacks and adversities.” The Prime Minister also acknowledged the RSS’s historical role during India’s freedom struggle, particularly noting how its founder Dr. Keshav Baliram Hedgewar endured imprisonment for his commitment to independence.
Reflecting on the trials RSS endured, Modi shared an impactful quote from former RSS chief Madhav Golwalkar, who said, “At times, the tongue may get caught under the teeth, but we do not break the teeth.” This vision of unity and perseverance resonated deeply, according to the Prime Minister.
In a significant gesture marking the centenary, Modi unveiled a special ₹100 commemorative coin and a postal stamp. The coin features Bharat Mata depicted in Varada Mudra, symbolizing the dedication and devotion of swayamsevaks. Modi proudly stated, “For the first time in our nation’s currency history, Bharat Mata represents our collective strength and identity.” The stamp highlights the RSS’s historical participation in the 1963 Republic Day Parade, illustrating its integral place in the nation’s history.
The Prime Minister remembered the RSS’s service during pivotal moments in Indian history, including the 1962 war, the 1971 refugee crisis, and the communal unrest of 1984. He emphasized their enduring commitment to compassion, equality and unity, which have been fundamental in shaping societal values.
Furthermore, Modi praised current Sarsanghchalak Mohan Bhagwat’s vision advocating for “one well, one temple, one cremation ground” as an initiative to dissolve societal discrimination. This progressive move signifies the RSS’s commitment to bridging divides and fostering inclusivity in Indian society.
General Secretary of the RSS, Dattatreya Hosabale expressed gratitude towards the government for acknowledging their century-long contributions. He described the launch of the coin and stamp as a tribute to the selfless dedication of swayamsevaks since 1925. “This recognition motivates us to continue our mission of serving the nation with utmost dedication,” he remarked during the event.
The centenary celebrations reflect not only on the achievements of the RSS but also inspire future generations to uphold values of patriotism and service to the community.
