Jammu’s Inclusive Development Flourishes Under Omar Abdullah

Former Chief Minister and National Conference president Dr. Farooq Abdullah asserted today that Jammu is transitioning towards inclusive and sustainable development under Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. He emphasized the region’s advancement, which is a stark contrast to the hollow promises of the past, during an interaction with a National Conference delegation.

Dr. Abdullah praised the current governance for restoring public confidence in democratic processes. He noted how the administration has opened corridors of power to the common people, bringing governance closer to its citizens. The delegation conveyed longstanding public issues, which they attributed to a decade of misrule by the BJP.

Highlighting the government’s initiatives, Dr. Abdullah remarked on how corrective measures introduced by the ruling party are reversing the setbacks faced by Jammu city over the past ten years. He indicated these efforts have been crucial in restoring faith in democratic institutions.

In light of the recent challenges, including disappointing outcomes from the much-publicised Smart City project, Dr. Abdullah argued that nature had quickly exposed the exaggerated claims made regarding the initiative. He stressed the necessity for transparency and accountability in public projects.

Additionally, the National Conference leader elaborated on significant undertakings by the Omar Abdullah-led government. He pointed out efforts to protect the historic Mubarak Mandi heritage complex, which has suffered neglect for many years. He also noted the introduction of free transport for women, increased ration quotas for the underprivileged, and the revival of the Darbar Move, all essential for rejuvenating local economic activity and alleviating hardship for traders in Jammu.

Future projects, such as the development of ropeways, riverside enhancements, and lake creation, are expected to enhance Jammu’s visibility on the national tourism map, solidifying its position as a key destination.

Dr. Abdullah encouraged party activists to prepare for the forthcoming Urban Local Body (ULB) and Panchayat elections, emphasizing the importance of strengthening public outreach. He underscored the need for special representation for youth and women to align governance with their expectations.

On a related note, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah addressed Gujjar institutions, urging them to undertake scientific research on the ramifications of climate change and reservation policies impacting the Gujjar-Bakerwal community. He expressed that such studies would contribute significantly towards shaping future policies conducive to the community’s growth.

Speaking at the Gurjar Desh Charitable Trust event on the third death anniversary of the esteemed Dr. Masud Ahmed Choudhary, Omar Abdullah described the late educationist as a visionary and institution-builder. He affirmed, “There is no dearth of talent in Gujjar institutions. If this talent is utilized for climate change research, it will greatly empower the community.”

The Chief Minister highlighted the vulnerability of the Gujjar-Bakerwal community due to its nomadic lifestyle, particularly in the face of climate change and natural disasters. He called for enhanced educational initiatives, including the establishment of Gujjar hostels, schools, and mobile schools, to secure better futures.

Omar Abdullah also pointed out the lack of serious assessments regarding the real benefits of reservation policies, remarking, “We have discussed reservation for years, but rigorous studies on its implications are still lacking.”

In a compelling address, Dr. Farooq Abdullah appealed for unity within the community and stressed the importance of prioritizing education for the upcoming generations as a pathway to a successful future. The event was attended by several ministers, MLAs, community representatives, and civil society members, signifying strong institutional support for these progressive initiatives.
