GMC Jammu Hosts Workshop on Palliative Care for Patients

Jammu, October 10, 2026: In recognition of World Palliative Care Day, the Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu organized a one-day Continuing Medical Education (CME) program themed “Pain Management – An Essential Part of Palliative Care.” The initiative aimed to draw attention to vital pain management strategies to improve the quality of life for patients battling cancer and other terminal conditions.

About 130 delegates, including specialists from diverse medical and surgical fields, postgraduate residents, and healthcare workers from district hospitals and private institutions, attended the event held at the college auditorium. The CME provided a fruitful platform for interdisciplinary collaboration and sharing of clinical insights in the realm of palliative care.

A pivotal moment of the event was the inauguration of a dedicated palliative care file, marking a step towards enhancing palliative services and fostering a more structured response to the needs of patients facing serious illnesses.

Dr. Ashutosh Gupta, Principal and Dean of GMC Jammu, spearheaded the workshop. His leadership team included Dr. Rajesh Mahajan as Organising Chairperson, Dr. Madan Katoch as Co-Chairperson, and other notable medical figures like Dr. Ashwani Kumar and Dr. Shruti Gupta, emphasizing a collaborative approach to medical education and care.

The scientific agenda featured expert-led lectures and dynamic panel discussions that addressed critical topics such as effective pain assessment, best practices for managing cancer pain, and the appropriate use of opioids. The event underscored a compassionate and individual-centric treatment strategy, incorporating psychological, social, and spiritual dimensions of patient care.

Dr. Jasmine Chaudhary and Dr. Heena Saini effectively anchored the proceedings, facilitating lively discussions that engaged all participants. A unique poster competition unfolded under the theme “The Last Chapter Can Still Be Beautiful,” inviting students and residents to creatively express their understanding of maintaining dignity and comfort at life’s end.

The CME concluded on a promising note, reinforcing the commitment to seamlessly integrate palliative care into everyday clinical practice. Attendees unanimously emphasized the need for timely pain relief and compassionate support for patients with severe illnesses, ensuring they receive dignified care during challenging times.
